Market

As designs move toward post-nanometer era, adding excessive margin or over-designing can no longer compensate for chips nanometer affects, not to mention the escalation of the product cost. Smaller process geometry result in lower operating voltage, thus lower noise margin. But smaller process geometry also increases IC noise due to higher density (more aggressors such as cell, memory, or IO), higher frequency (more switching events), and higher impact from package / board parasitics. Smaller margins for noise tolerance with greater sources of noise make accurate analysis and optimization a "must have" sign-off requirement for ultra-deep submicron designs. In addition, cost reduction requires understanding of global power and noise impact on the chip, package, and system early in the design cycle where highest level of optimization is possible.
